Vadjraghanta is an idiophone (from Greek ιδιος, "same";, φωνη "sound"),
musical instrument, where the source of the sound is the instrument’s
body itself. Vadjraghanta is an unique instrument. The first specimen
was created in August 2013, and since then Vadjraghanta is becoming
more and more famous.
The creator of the instrument — Oleg Veshii — lives
in Kharkov (Ukraine) and makes instruments for anybody, regardless
of their residence.

More about the meaning of the word Vadjraghanta

Vadjraghanta in Sanskrit means both "lightning" and "diamond" at the same time. Like a lightning,
Vadjra makes its way through the darkness of ignorance; like a diamond, it destroys and remains intact.

Vadjraghanta is an instrument that symbolizes two beginnings:

  • masculine — vadjra (diamond, reliability, durability, activity). Usually vadjra is held
    in the right hand.
  • feminine — ghanta (bell, harmony, beauty, wisdom). Ghanta is held in the left hand.

Bell which has a handle in shape of vadjra symbolizes the power of faith.
The philosophy of the instrument is based on these two concepts — strength and reliability of a man, and beauty and harmony of a woman.

Oleg Veshii

"This music is like a rustle of coastal sand, which is cared by ocean wave. This wave tail away just for a moment, it gives us a chance to feel the absolute soundlessness and then rolls from a huge abyss of being again, dips us into the melodic and meditative condition... This is the sound of your soul"

The look of Vadjraghanta deserves no less attention than its sound.
Vadjraghanta is made in an eastern philosophical tradition.
Such appearance is not achieved by painting (which is undesirable for resonating
instruments), but by engraving and subsequent double-laminated brass plating. This not only
gives the instrument a "noble" appearance, but also has positive impact on the sound,
tactile senses and serves as additional corrosion protection.

Though the instrument has an impressive size you can place it on your knees comfortably.
The weight of the instrument is about 5.5 kg, and is quite ОК for its size.
The instrument is adjusted "in a note", tongues have fairly long and deep sustain.
Vadjraghanta is quite loud but responsive.
You can play with either your fingers or chopsticks.

Manufacturing technology

The creator of Vadjraghanta Oleg Veshii heard of a hang in 2012. Magical sound of reed instruments attracted his attention, so he wanted to figure out if he could create something brand new with better sound. This question became the start of an interesting journey and his searching has led to the project, which is known as Vadjraghanta now.

The project is based on desire to create the reed instrument which has deeper and high quality sound, without specific metallic overtone. At the same time the instrument must be a reliable companion in travels. Steel matrix for Vadjraghanta was developed with the help of the leading specialist in this area.
The main computing of the instrument’s geometry were based on knowledge of Victor Levinson — teacher, friend and genius in the field of creating percussion musical instruments. Their acquaintanceship and cooperation one can name either a coincidence or divine intent but Vadjraghanta would have never been born without Victor. Victor gave to Oleg’s disposal his entire boundless knowledge of "'metal to sound' transformation".

The main difference Vadjraghanta from other similar instruments is no metal "impurities" in the sound. This is achieved by special geometry of the instrument and special metal processing. Oleg Veshii took as basis the principles of manufacturing SpB Pantam. Many details of technical process are taken from manufacture technologies of hang drum, hand pans and SpB Pantam: geometry of the instrument, heat treatment, steel grade, covering, and its setting in special tuning program which Victor Levinson uses itself.

Shape of  the instrument is embossed by stamping carbon steel from
1.5 mm to 2-3 mm thick. Then the metal is nitrited and sandblasted, after what it is primary tuned and covered with a layer of brass. Then it is glued and has the final setting in 440 Hz.

Instrument weights 4.7-5.7 kg. Size: diameter — 46-50 sm, depth — 20-22 sm. Instrument is adjusted to any requested tune. Each tune is harmonious and has its own mood and temper, which you can feel in the videos below.

Each instrument has a soft and comfy waterproof bagpack.
